Mobile contacting
This has
been a typical scenario of conventional paging systems and SMS is
increasingly replacing paging here. The main purpose of this application is
to reach outdoor employees and field service personnel on the company campus
or at the customer site discreetly and any time. The replacement of pagers
by existing mobile phones with SMS is inexpensive and quickly done.
Additionally, SMS offers various technical advantages which are explained
below.
Internal person-to-person communication
Most UM
systems (Unified Messaging Systems) for internal communication offer SMS
functionality and are used for mobile contacting or wireless
person-to-person messaging. However, SMS functionality of UM system is often
limited and unidirectional. Adding a powerful SMS application to the IT
environment can extend the UM system, provide enough power and message
throughput for large corporate applications, offer 2-way communication and
set free enormous potential. It significantly increases the efficiency and
application range of mobile communication.
Automated and manual alerts and escalation
SMS is
perfectly suited for alerting mobile maintenance personnel. Essential for
this particular scenario is the availability of third-party interfaces to
embed SMS seamlessly and reliably into existing IT environments. The
availability of flexible escalation mechanisms is beneficial. Thus, SMS
alarms can be initiated manually or fully automated by production line
monitoring or other corporate management systems.
Mobile office applications, e-mail notifications
The
objective of numerous deployments of SMS and other mobile communication
tools is the mobilization of existing applications and the integration of
field service staff into the work and communication flow. In this regard the
mobilization of office applications, especially of email, plays a basic
role. The wireless notification of new, incoming e-mails is a simple but
important and typical application. The notification of new appointment and
calendar events is also often desired.
Group
messaging
For
internal team and group communication SMS is an exceptional tool. In
opposition to paging systems, groups can be assigned and managed dynamically
via a web user interface. Submission of messages is seamlessly integrated
into an intranet website. Although there is no pager-like broadcast group
transmission contemporary, SMS software can easily emulate such behavior.
